In 1975 Peter and Dick Dreissigacker started along a path that led to what many of us are familiar with: the Concept2 Rowing machine and Skierg. What started out as creating oars for themselves has grown into a business that operates in 33 countries, and a not-for-profit outdoor centre that brings some much needed life experience to children from all over America.

In this episode I sit down with the engineers behind Concept2 at their head office in the jaw-droppingly beautiful Vermont.

The little MIA we’ve had from the podcast was not planned… After considering throwing in the towel and just getting a job (NB: I did not get a job. ), today’s episode is about what you can do when you just can’t keep all your balls in the air, where the podcast has been, and where it’s going.

Outside in. That’s how most people operate, responding to things that happen to them. Living in a reactionary way, only acting when something nudges them, always waiting for something to happen to them, rather than making it happen.

But if you switch to “inside out”, you’ll find a life with drive. A life with passion, and a life with excitement. A life that goes where you want it to go, because you’re the one directing it.

We all know by now that the magic occurs in the execution. Things happen when we do something about it.

So how then so we take our core values – those things that drive us – and implement them on a daily basis. Is it even possible? Do we need to quit our job, sell our possessions, leave our relationships, create MASSIVE change, in order to do so?

My answer is no. But what you do have to shift is the awareness you have about your life and your attitude to the possibility of creating something even better.

This series is all about becoming the driving force in your own life, and in this episode I talk about how switching your perspective from being outcome oriented to process oriented – aka day to day life – is the key to loving every minute of your life.

“We look so far ahead at what we want the end result to be that we either ignore the process, detach from the process or hate every minute of it, and simply put up with it in order to reach the end goal. That’s a recipe for short term discomfort, and long term failure.”

Series 1 of the Peanut Butter Podcast is here!

In it, Jane takes us through her action plan for sustainable change. From Awareness to “Never Stop Progressing” Jane has laid out the steps we can all follow to take A.C.T.I.O.N in our lives, and start living better today, and every day.

Awareness is the first step in taking A.C.T.I.O.N for sustainable change. When we’re using google maps, we can’t get to where we want to go if google doesn’t know where we already are. Awareness is about identifying our starting point, so we can get to where we want to go in life.

The thing with choice that I absolutely love, it that it’s somewhat black and white. It challenges my natural tendency towards grey areas, and what I vehemently believe is that choice is our opportunity. So many of us believe that we don’t have a choice, but really, we do.

I’ve been building this framework for over a year now, and through everyone I’ve worked with, ‘time’ has far and away been the core reason people give me for a lack of performance and progress.

I used to call this stage “perseverance”, but I changed to “never stop progressing” because persevere made it seem like a struggle.

And while the truth is that it’s never actually over, “Never Stop Progressing” is about living with passion and purpose, and building a direction based on intent. It’s about taking action every single day, and revisiting each step over and over, in the hope of sustaining the bliss point of balance, happiness and drive, every single day.

This is where the shit gets real. This is, literally, where it all happens.

Some people jump straight to it, without research, without intention, without consideration; and that’s why quick fixes and checklists provided by someone else don’t work long term.

It’s not because we don’t have the ‘will power’; it’s because we haven’t laid the foundations for sustainable change.

Intention is your ‘why?’; your reason. Your purpose with which you act, and think, and do. “Why” is change important to you? “Why” are change, progress, betterment, joy important to you?

“Why” is what’s left when your outcome is reached, or you’ve failed to reach your outcome.
