MAYDAY! 2019

In May 2019 we ran the first “Mayday!”, a month-long partner fitness challenge in partnership with Movember, the charity tackling prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

Around the world one man take his own life every sixty seconds. Exercise has been shown to alleviate the symptoms of depression as, or more, effectively than medication. And there’s no better way to exercise than with your mates.

This workout was super simple, and was really just a test of power endurance. It's not enough to be super strong - you need enough endurance to keep it up!

Dennis from Buitengewoon Sportief came up with this punishment. We still love him though. Unsurprisingly his gym dominated this super challenging test!

This was SO MUCH FUN! It either tested your choice of partner (Jake was carrying someone literally half his weight...) or your ability to carry yourself. But the real challenge was weight and exercise selection: if you chose a relatively light weight, it only took a couple of reps to fall behind someone carrying a heavier load. And the bike was irrelevant - and those who chose to smash the second part won by huge margins.

Back to my roots on the rower! The hardest thing about a rowerg relay is the change overs. As you get tired, they get longer and longer - so if your changeovers were polished, you did better than someone "fitter" than you!

The final test! The idea was to have you tagging in your partner when you couldn't go on... "Mayday! Mayday!" We threw everything at everyone with this: upper body, lower body, strength, power, technique and power-endurance.

5 THINGS
WORTH KNOWING
ABOUT
MEN’S HEALTH

Learn them, live them,
and pass them along.

1. MAKE MAN TIME

Stay connected. Spending time with your friends is good for you. Catch up regularly, check in and make time.

2. HAVE OPEN CONVERSATIONS

Talk about what’s really going on. Listen. Being there for someone can be life-saving.

3. KNOW THE NUMBERS

At 50, talk to your doctor about prostate cancer. If you’re of African or Caribbean descent or have a father or brother with prostate cancer, have the convo at 45.

4. KNOW THY NUTS

Give ‘em a feel regularly and get to know what’s normal for you. Something doesn’t seem right? Go to the doctor.

5. MOVE, MORE

Get active on a daily basis. Do more of what makes you feel good.
